Diablo Valley College garden grows for Loaves and Fishes |
|
It’s harvest time at the Diablo Valley College garden and due to the
generosity of horticulture teacher Karen Talbot, Loaves and Fishes has
been receiving fresh herbs, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and
corn this summer. The DVC garden is run by students and volunteers who
plant, prune and harvest the herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables all
year long. Loaves and Fishes is grateful to Karen and to her students
for all the wonderful fresh produce to add to our salads and serve to
our clients so we can provide a balanced, healthy meal each day.

Its Harvest Time at Loaves & Fishes |
|
August is traditionally the time to harvest and enjoy fresh fruits
and vegetables. That tradition is alive and well at Loaves & Fishes.
Every August Vincent J. Granberg of Rose Lane Farms on Bethel Island
arrives with a load of vine ripened heirloom tomatoes for the kitchen.
Vincent has been delivering tomatoes to Loaves & Fishes for over 3
years. His farm grown heirloom tomatoes are a site to behold; bold
colors and shapes. These yellow, green and red tomatoes will be diced,
sliced and cooked into an aromatic tomato sauce that will be used in a
variety of hearty dishes. Given the large quantity of tomatoes, James
Porter, our head cook, will prepared gallons upon gallons of fresh
tomato sauce to be frozen and used over the next several months. The
harvest of today will keep on giving into the months ahead. Thank you
Vincent and everyone at Rose Lane Farms!!
