De La Salle JV Lacrosse Team Washes Cars to Feed the Hungry in Contra Costa

The sun was shining and the energy was in high gear as the De La Salle JV Lacrosse team came out in force to do what they could to stamp out hunger in Contra Costa County. The team wanted to volunteer as a group to support Loaves & Fishes of Contra Costa, which supplies hot nutritious meals to anyone who is hungry. The car wash was held at DMV Smog located at 699 Ygnacio Valley Road.

The problem: they needed to do the volunteer work on a Saturday, and so a car wash idea was born. Working with Rodger Jensen, LFCC’s volunteer services manager, and Joleen Lafayette, LFCC’s development director and a mother of one of the players, plans developed into a very successful car wash.

Parents of the boys supplied all the needed material, including soap, buckets, hoses, towels and chamois. Families even supplied Hagen Das ice cream treats as well as sandwiches, snacks and bottled water. The team and head coach Bobby Garcia and assistant coaches Trent Barmy and Mickey Meehan treated the day just like a practice. The team huddled and was given instructions and received a pep talk from LFCC executive director, Mike Baroman-Coggins, about what they were supporting by doing the car wash and then were assigned to stations. The team was grouped into four major sections: marketing by holding signs on the road and directing cars into the waiting line, washing, rinsing and drying. The coaches kept the players focused on the tasks at hand.

From 8 am until the close at 1 pm the team washed over 120 cars and raised an incredible $1,336.00 for LFCC. That will feed at least 630 meals to hungry guests at our dining rooms in Martinez, Antioch and Oakley. LFCC and our guests say, “Thank you so much!” to the De La Salle JV Lacrosse team and their coaches. It was great to see their enthusiasm and energy put to a great cause.  Coach Garcia said, “I would like to see his become a yearly event, the boys did well.” Way to go guys!
