Barbara Watkins - Client and Volunteer

Barbara found the Pittsburg Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa (LFCC) dining room in September 2010 when she was walking and saw the LFCC sign for free hot lunches. She met the dining room manager, Debbie, and they discussed their Christian faith, bonding immediately.  Debbie invited Barbara to try the free hot and nutritious meal.

Barbara immediately found the Loaves and Fishes atmosphere to be a friendly and family environment.  She felt the love and warmth of the dining room staff and volunteers, and came to eat every day.  Barbara works intermittently as a home health care aid and is looking for employment.  She is living with friends right now.  Barbara said that the Loaves and Fishes experience is not just about the food, but about caring, compassion, and community where love is shown to those in need.

When she saw how hard Debbie and the volunteers worked every day, she wanted to give back, and started by helping to set up the tables and chairs.  Now her regular volunteer task is to handle the beverage station.  Barbara remarked that she regularly hears clients say what a blessing Loaves and Fishes is because of the hot meal, but also the kindness and feeling of connection they get.
