The Little Church That Could

Community Baptist Church at 62 Bella Vista Avenue in the community of Bay Point is the little church that could. You all remember the story “The Little Train that Could?” CBC is our little church that could. In two weeks we celebrate the one year anniversary of serving meals in Bay Point. The idea started when two parishioners met the Loaves & Fishes of Contra Costa (LFCC) Operations Manager at a community meeting. From there the church decided to minister to the community by providing hot meals. LFCC agreed to supply the food. CBC became a partner site in January 2010.

As a partner site, the church supplied the space, volunteers and utensils to serve the meal. They also came and picked up the food from our central kitchen. The first day they served 27 hungry guests. By July the church was struggling. The guest kept coming and soon the count was 80-100 people a day. This strained the churches small budget for the program.

In July 2010 the LFCC Board of Directors voted to have CBC become a Loaves and Fishes managed site. This took the burden of paying for serving supplies off of the church. Since that time the program has grown and prospered.

The largest challenge facing CBC currently is the supply of volunteers. Two-three volunteers are needed daily, Monday – Friday to help the staff serve and clean up the dining room.
